Extended Edition's New Military Units for the Old Civilizations.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:24 PM PDT

I was just checking the new military units that the Extended Edition gives to the Greeks, Egyptians, Norse and Atlanteans. I wonder those who use them, how they perform, specially in multiplayer games, in contrast of how they look on paper (https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Age_of_Mythology:Tale_of_the_Dragon):

    • Greek: Physician. Healing unit with no attack, available since the Classic Age and occupying 2 of population space. It benefits mainly Poseidon, since it lacked healing god favours and technologies (temples of Apollo). It looks like a good addition.
    • Egyptian: Khopesh Swordsman: Infantry unit supposed to be good at raiding. It is cheap, available since the Classic Age and weak but it costs 2 population space. For being a good raiding unit, it should move fast. I am not sure of its added value in competitive settings. For instance, the Egyptians have chariots and camel riders; Set can raid early with wild animals, and subsidiarily, Egyptians can use slingers and some myth units for that task.
    • Norse: Bogsveigir: It is an archer and just for that reason it seems to be a relevant addition to the Norse. Additionally, it is not only strong against infantry but also supposed to be strong against myth units. For those reasons, it has some advantages over the throwing axemen, which have less range. However, his disadvantages are the population space, relatively high costs (8o wood, 40 gold) and the need to reach the Heroic Age and build a Hill Fort to train this unit (except on the Sea of Worms map). His main counters are, of course, huskarls and raiding cavalry.
    • Atlantean: Onager: This unit comes from AoE2, although its appearance in this game is more like the Norse Ballista. In AoE2, the onager is one of the most used military units in competitive games and it's really a game changer there that doesn't exist as such in AoE1 and AoE3, because it is particularly deadly for the massed archers. Even pro players struggle in microing their archers/crossbowmen/arbalests in order to survive the onager shots. But, I wonder how it performs in AoM. For instance, it's population space is 3, which is not bad for a siege unit in this game. It requires a Palace (Heroic Age) as expected. In addition, it constitutes a third siege weapon for the Atlanteans, since they already get a kind of ballista that throws multiple arrows (cheiroballista) and which is available since the Classic Age, and the Syphon. The suggested strategy) for using this weapon is disappointing for me. But what do you think?
