[Discussion]: What if all the specialised counter units in AOM required only Food and Wood to train similar to AOE2?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:52 AM PDT

Clarifications (please read this before commenting):

What do I mean by "specialised counter" units?

This post will only be including units that excel in combat against a specific category of enemy military unit, but struggles to defeat any credible foes outside of this specific category (essentially the AOE 2 definition of trash units). This is why the Katapeltes for instance is included in this list as it specifically deals 3x damage against cavalry, whilst only having base 5 hack attack to use against everything else (making it obviously weak against other infantry and archer compared to more general options), whilst something like the Murmillo isn't, since it actually doesn't possess any damage bonuses against cavalry, (but has better base stats), as it's intended to be a general purpose unit and not a specialised counter, despite what the "effective against x" blurbs in game may imply.

Destroyers, Khopesh Swordsman and Scout Cavalry won't be included as they do not fit under the definition of countering only enemy military units, since they only "counter" villagers and buildings.

(The theoritical changes would appear something like this):

    Egyptians:

Slingers (Counter Archer): 60 Wood, 24 Food

Axeman (Counter Infantry): 40 Food, 30 Wood

Spearman (Counter Cavalry): 50 Food, 20 Wood

All of their upgrades cost Food and Wood

    Greeks:

Hypastist (Counter Infantry): 60 Food, 25 Wood

Peltast (Counter Archer): 60 Wood, 20 Food

Podromos (Counter Cavalry): 70 Food, 40 Wood

    Norse:

Huskarl (Counter Archer): 75 Wood, 40 Food

Raiding Cavalry (Counter Archer): 40 Food, 50 Wood

    Atlanteans:

Katapeltes (Counter Cavalry): 60 Food, 35 Wood

Turma (Counter Archer): 50 Wood, 45 Food

    Chinese:

Mounted Archer: 75 Wood, 55 Food

The idea of these changes is to replicate "trash units" from AOE2, wood becomes more important for non-archer focused civilisations and or gods, Egyptian barrack units become a more viable option to use (since they don't use the precious gold you need for buildings or migdol units) and in general just increase the variety of usable units.

I personally mainly like the idea for Egyptians as their barrack units are clearly meant to have a trash unit role and I would like them to be more viable to use in the Heroic and Mythic ages, additionally I feel that wood should have more usages for Egyptians outside of some specific researches, Chariot Archers and Siege units, since they don't require wood for buildings and Chariot Archers are their only good non-siege military unit that costs wood. The rest of the civilisations I have no particular thoughts on, as I mainly included them for the sake of completion and discussion.

Share thoughts below and state any units you believe I forgot to list for this discussion

    Bugs when building

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:34 PM PDT

I have installed Age of Mythology on Windows 10, everything seems to work fine except when it comes to build buildings. The building should be redded out where it is not possible to build it at some place (e.g. where there are trees, gold mines, etc...), but it isn't. Does anyone have any idea to fix this bug?
